A Seminole homeowner had a steep, muddy path down the side of the house that washed out with every summer storm. They asked us to build a stable set of garden steps that would handle foot traffic and heavy rain.
We cut the slope into level landings, laid landscape fabric and compacted gravel, set flat stone treads and edged the path with a pressure-treated timber border along the fence line.
Project goals
The steps had to stay put during Florida downpours and give the homeowner safe footing to the back gate.
drainage base
Fabric and compacted gravel let water drain through instead of washing out the path.
timber edging
Pressure-treated timber holds the gravel and stones in place along the fence.
Project challenges
The slope was steeper near the gate, and loose soil had to be stabilized without heavy equipment in a narrow side yard.
- hand-digging in a narrow side yard
- keeping each step a comfortable rise
- stopping storm runoff from undermining treads
- hauling stone and gravel by wheelbarrow
The result
After several heavy storms the steps have not shifted, and the side yard no longer turns into a mud slide. Planning something similar? Read more about our Deck Repair service or request a free estimate.
